In June 2004 HP announced the release of the Color LaserJet 2550 printer in North America, after being released to the European market a month earlier. The Color LaserJet 2820 and 2840 MFPs were launched in May 2005. All three machines had the same OEM-rated print speeds of 20 pages per minute (ppm) for monochrome and 4 ppm for color. Duty cycles were also the same for all three at 30,000 pages per month. The 2820 MFP features included printing, copying and scanning, with the 2840 MFP adding faxing.
The supplies set for all models was made up of four toner cartridges and one drum unit. Replacement color toner cartridges are available in 2,000 page standard yield and 4,000 page high yield versions. Black is available only in the 4,000 page standard yield version. The drum unit yields 20,000 pages for black and 5,000 pages for color. Toner cartridges and drum units all require a chip for correct printer operation.
